This year’s International Symposium of Macro Technology (MB) coincides with the 20th anniversary of Macroblock and the rise of 5G cross-generation applications. The seminar has a whole day of rich agenda and the diversified LED display application and technology display outside the venue also attracted enthusiastic interaction and discussion.

1-Exhibition outside the gathering technology seminar

This time, Macroblock Technology expanded the exhibition into four regions, 5G future high frame rate display experience area, high integrated LED driver IC area, support 64-scan LED display driver IC area, and mini-LED / micro-LED driver IC area.

5G future high frame rate display experience area

The 5G First Year Official Start and the data transmission speed of 20Gbps pushed the LED display application to the high standard level of high grayscale video source (12bit), high refresh frame frequency (120Hz), and high display resolution (7680×4320). When LED screens are combined with 5G communication, many applications become possible, such as 8K HDR high-definition image display, cloud esports game with a frame frequency of 120Hz/144Hz, high-definition real-time broadcast and VR/AR of sports events. The image has no delay and feels more realistic.

In order to explore the industry’s LED display specifications and the needs and challenges of the 5G generation, we have shown two LED display cabinets in the experience zone, using the most common frame frequency (60Hz) and high refresh frames that meet the 5G requirements (120Hz). It can be clearly found that when the LED display screen transmits the 120 Hz frame frequency, the huge amount of data cannot be transmitted by the current architecture, which makes it unable to display images. Besides, the small-pitch LED display will also encounter challenges in the 5G generation: 1. Because of the excessive number of driver ICs, the PCB layout is difficult. 2. Too many control signal lines make PCB wiring uneasy. 3. The clock frequency is increased but the PCB quality is difficult to upgrade. To overcome the above challenges, MB actively invested a large amount of research and development resources, and successively released the corresponding highly integrated 48-channel LED driver IC series (MBI5359 and MBI5864), built-in MOSFET and clock frequency to reduce control signal lines and increase the clock frequency, also improve the efficiency and quality of PCB construction.

Highly integrated LED driver IC area (MBI5850, MBI5759, MBI5359)

In the highly integrated LED driver IC area, MB also showcases three different architecture products: MBI5850, MBI5759 and MBI5359.

The MBI5850 showcase also features e-sports/rental-related videos and scrolling grayscale map to showcase its 16-bit grayscale effects. The application market aims at high-end rental and high-quality LED display applications. The range is from 1.2 to 6 mm. The MBI5850 is a 12-channel high integrated LED display driver IC for row-column scan architecture and features superior HDR functionality (remain 16-bit grayscale and 3840Hz refresh rate in a 32-scan design) with a max contrast ratio of 25,000:1, and perfectly performs 16-bit grayscale effects. The advantage of the row-column scan structure is that it can simplify the wiring design of the LED display module PCB, thereby reducing manufacturing costs such as manpower and materials, and improving production efficiency.

Mini LED IC Macroblock

Both MBI5759 and MBI5359 are 48-channel high integrated LED display driver ICs, mainly to meet the high-standard LED display screens with ultra-small pitch (point spacing 0.5~1.5mm). The MBI5759 is a joint cathode LED driver architecture, while the MBI5359 is a joint anode LED driver architecture. A 32-scan LED display can achieve a true 16-bit grayscale display with MBI5359’s superior HDR function, converting a 10-bit image input source directly into a 16-bit grayscale output image and also has a high refresh rate of 3840Hz. Besides, the MBI5359 is equipped with Dynamic+ power-saving features. Under the structure of the joint cathode LED display, using the MBI5759 with the dedicated power supply system of the joint cathode LED and the Dynamic+ power-saving function of the driver IC, the power consumption of the joint cathode LED display can be greatly reduced. In terms of image quality, the MBI5759 can achieve 14-bit grayscale output to provide high-quality image output.

MB uses three LED display cabinet to display MBI5359 in 14-bit grayscale mode (SDR video source), MBI5359 in 16-bit grayscale mode (HDR video source), and MBI5759 in 14-bit grayscale mode (HDR video source) for display effect and power-saving effect comparison. The viewer can see that the LED display cabinet with MBI5359 in 16-bit grayscale mode (HDR video source) has the most abundant color performance, the best contrast ratio (25,000:1), and the highest level of color depth performance. Meanwhile, the joint cathode LED display cabinet utilizes the advantages of MBI5759 and special power supply design, which can greatly reduce the power consumption of the LED display, reduce the surface temperature and have high-quality images at the same time.

Support 64-scan 16-channel LED display driver IC area (MBI5754, MBI5254)

MB for the first time debut the support 64-scan 16-channel LED display driver IC. This time MB launched two ICs, one for MBI5754, which is a joint cathode LED driver architecture, and the other is MBI5254, which belongs to the joint anode LED driver architecture. The cabinet is made by Lamp Video. Since the highest number of scans can support 64-scan, the number of driver ICs can be reduced and a certain image level can be maintained, and the high contrast interference and color shift problem of the LED display can be significantly improved. Also, the display quality specification can support up to 14-bit grayscale and 3840Hz refresh rate. MBI5754 is suitable for pixel pitch of 1.5~4.0mm, while MBI5254 is suitable for pixel pitch of 1.0~6mm. It is suitable for applications including studio, central control room, stage rental and so on.

3-Highly integrated LED driven IC display area

Mini-LED / micro-LED driver IC area (MBI5759, MBI5864)

The mini-LED/micro-LED driver IC area is mainly based on the pixel pitch P0.625 display, respectively adopts two 48-channel high-integrated LED driver IC solutions, one is the current solution-joint cathode LED driver IC-MBI5759. The other is the latest introduction of the 64-scan row-column structure LED driver IC-MBI5864. Because the MBI5864 belongs to the row-column architecture and the number of scans can be up to 64, it can use less driver ICs than current solutions, saving PCB layout space and reducing module power consumption. Besides, MBI5864’s display quality specifications support up to 16-bit grayscale and 3840Hz refresh rate, resulting in a contrast ratio of 25,000:1, in line with the superior HDR specification and its applicable pixel pitch are 0.4~1.5mm.4-Mini-led micro-led driven IC display area
