“Strategic speed up”, Micro-LED breaks the display industry
Micro-LED as a new path to display technology may change the entire LED industry ecology.
As the technical bottleneck breaks through and the cost decreases, as long as a small number of display products begin to introduce the technology, the contribution to the overall LED output value will be very large. The immature technology, the most obvious performance in the market is the high cost of the product, Micro LED is no exception. Micro-LEDs require two sets of substrates, one of which is a large-area silicon substrate, which is expensive when used in large-scale production. In addition, the huge amount of LEDs is expensive.
Micro-LED essentially shrinks and arrays LEDs and transfers large quantities of miniature LEDs onto the circuit board. The core technical difficulty is to transfer a huge amount of miniature LEDs to the substrate. The LEDs after transfer should have uniformity. In order to achieve the desired effect of the illuminating display. The micro-process technology solves how to shrink the millimeter-level LED chip to only 1% of the original size. Micro-LED requires μm process. At present, the mainstream small-pitch LED chip size is below 200μm, and the chip size is 1-10μm. However, the small-pitch enterprises on the market are currently developing the smallest size of small-pitch LED screen with a pitch of less than 1mm. The lamp bead size is close to 500μm. At present, industry technology still has huge challenges in terms of yield and stability.
In addition, a major problem with Micro LEDs is the problem of full colorization and uniform wavelength of light. The monochromatic Micro LED array can be realized by flip-chip package and driver IC bonding, but the RGB array needs to be divided into red, blue and green crystals, and hundreds of thousands of LED dies need to be embedded. This has higher requirements for the efficacy, wavelength consistency, and yield of LED dies. At the same time, the expenditure of chromatic aberration of LED is also a bottleneck that hinders technology.
According to the predictions of relevant organizations, in the short term, smart watches and VR/AR are most likely to be mass-produced due to the required pixels. In the future, with the gradual maturity of technology, Micro LED will also be used in outdoor displays, smart phones, tablets and TVs. The field is commercialized. Therefore, the potential market space for Micro LED 4 inch epitaxial wafers in 2018-2021 is expected to be 864 million, 926 million, 1.893 billion and 3.823 billion. Even if Micro LED only replaces 10% of the display market, the demand for 4-inch epitaxial wafers will exceed 80 million wafers per year in the current 2018 display market volume, which has exceeded the current 4-inch epitaxial wafer demand for the whole year. (It is estimated that the demand for 4-inch epitaxial wafers in 2017 will be around 60 million pieces).
From the perspective of the development of the entire industry chain, the Micro LED industry chain is roughly divided into four major segments: LED chip, transfer, panel and terminal application. Currently, the chip and application are the most promoted, and the mid-end link is weak. Among them, epitaxial wafers will become the most important benefit link in the Micro-LED industry chain.
In addition, unlike traditional LED packages, leadless SMD packages are mainly used. For this reason, off-chip growth and chip transfer are closely related. It is entirely possible for upstream companies to participate in the back-end transfer packaging process, replacing traditional packaging companies.
As far as the current enterprise layout is concerned, the upstream and midstream enterprises are still in the stage of “Micro-LED technology reserve” and “capacity investment preparation”. The specific application has not really landed, which means that 2018 is still more ready to apply.
